The Success Cycle: Why Failure Breeds Failure & Success Breeds Success.
How many times do we start something thinking (deep inside, more at a belief level) that we’re going to fail or “it is not going to work out”, and consequently we see ourselves going in a downward spiral and meet the failure that we most dreaded. Likewise, when we embark on something new with a positive attitude (or belief), it allows us to build contagious momentum to get us through the disappointments (sort of bumps in the road) and eventually success. What am I talking about? Both in business (or career) and personal life, while self-belief may not guarantee your success, but self-doubt and disbelief will definitely lead to failure.
There are seven keywords that we need to understand and apply (or live) to harness our very own real potential and the results that we desire and deserve. Let’s unpack each them one by one.
1. Beliefs and Values
If you talk or read about any highly successful person, you will find that they start with an enormous amount of self-belief. They believe that future can be better than the present and they have the power to make it so, either for themselves, their family & friends, or the humanity at large. If you are unable to live your legend or your dream life, chances are that you have limiting beliefs. Source of limiting beliefs stem from our thinking as science proves that over 95% of what we think each day is repetitive. Limited thinking (or stream of consciousness) will lead to limited beliefs.
Ask yourself a question. What is most important in your life? Is it what people think about you, or what you think about yourself? In the words of Henry Ford, “whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right”.
Let me list down some limiting beliefs that we all had or have heard about.
- I am too old or I am too young
- I am not smart (or educated) enough
- I know I am going to fail
- The only way to make money is rip other people off
- You have to have money to make money
- I won’t be loved after becoming rich or successful
- I don’t think I deserve it
- I won’t be loved
- I am a victim of circumstances
- I live in scarcity, there will never be enough
- It is too hard, I quit
- Life happens to me (not for me)
“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Nelson Mandela
Our beliefs and values exist at the sub-conscious mind level, and that’s why they are hardest to change. As Jim Rohn once said, “Every day, stand guard at the door of your mind”.
2. Mindset or Attitude
As they say, “your attitude determines your altitude”. Limiting beliefs breed limited mindset, which in turn produces limiting attitude. Stop focusing on things you can’t change or what you don’t want or what’s missing from your life, instead focus on what’s in your control and what you so truly desire. As someone said, happiness depends on your mindset and attitude, change your mindset to change your attitude. Happiness is NOT in the circumstance.
Our attitude exist at the conscious mind level, so it more directly in our control and thus easier to change. It always seems impossible until its’ done. Don’t let negative people take up space in your head, raise the rent and serve them the eviction notice.
Your past is not equal to your future, you need make continuous effort to unlock your true potential. I totally believe that human potential is unlimited and we can achieve our goals if we set our mind to them. However, most people are unable to tap into their own full potential, why? Because they have limited belief, which breeds limited mindset, which in turn produces negative attitude and doesn’t allow them to tap into their full potential.
Embrace your failures, your vulnerabilities, and your past. You’re unique and God has given you gifts that you need to fully leverage. As someone said, God never loses sight of our true and eternal potential, even when we do! Avoid self-doubt and let yourself live your legend. Life isn’t supposed to be just passing of time.
As Nelson Mandela once said, “Vision without action is just a dream, action without vision just passes the time, and vision with action can change the world.” Go ahead and take action towards the results you desire. If you can tap into your potential and take massive action, the resulting momentum is sufficient to propel you to positive results.
Be flexible around your strategy, but not your final worth goal.
Follow your passion. If you’ve not found your passion, keep looking. If you have found your passion, then don’t waste a second. Do what you love, or what’s most important to you, finding your passion will certainly lead to your true purpose in life. Live with passion and take risks. Try to deeply understand the odds and temper your expectations likewise.
6. Modeling and Visualization
As they say, success leaves clues. If you are already living your dream life, there is always a next level. You can model someone who is even more successful than you – in personal or professional life. Find out how they become so successful and model their success. Try to use positive mental images to achieve your goals. You can also create a vision board.
As someone said, you can have results or excuses but not both. Tap your full potential, take massive action, and produce the results that nobody else has. Success is not one giant event, it is all the small things put together (likewise failure). Once you see results, you will be able to tap more of your potential, and then it becomes a game.
Fall in love with the process, as journey is truly the destination. At the end of the day, results will only matter, if you like the person you’ve become.
